Saint Robert BellarmineSaint Robert Bellarmine was born in 1542 in Tuscany, Italy, into a family that possessed little wealthbut deep faith. His health was fragile from childhood, yet his mind was bright and eager for God. Heexcelled in study and poetry, but above all he cultivated a heart oriented toward Christ. His lectures becamethe foundation of works that guided the Church for centuries. He also served the popes with loyaltyand prudence. When Pope Sixtus V’s edition of the Vulgate proved deeply flawed, Bellarmine cour-ageously warned that it posed “a very great danger” to the Church.
